Silsila |

Silsila- released in the year 1981, was another feather in the cap of the Yashraj banner. The film has some haunting music by the duo Hariprasad Chaurasia and Shiv Kumar Sharma. Though the film did not exactly set the box office on fire, this Bollywood flick has been praised for its sensitive story line, fine performances and taut screenplay. On the other hand the film-Silsila raised many an eye-brow at its bold retelling of what could have been the story of Amitabh Bachchan's own life.

The narrative revolves around the lives of five characters. Shekhar and Amit Malhotra played by Shashi Kapur and Amitabh Bachchan respectively, have been orphaned at a very early age. They have lived through all circumstances. When the film starts we see they are introduced to the audiences as fine young men leading independent lives. Shekhar is a much respected Squadron Leader with the Indian Air Force. Amit is trying to make it as a writer and his works are fairly well known.
As the narrative further unfolds in Silsila we find that Shekhar is courting the sober sedate Shobha. The character was convincingly enacted perfectly by the actress Jaya Bhaduri who incidentally happens to be the wife of Amitabh Bachchan in real life as well. Amit pursues the vivacious and well groomed Chandni. Reha fit into the role perfectly. There is a change in circumstances. Fate plays a cruel role when Shekhar dies prematurely in a plane crash. It leaves his lady love shattered as she is expecting his child.
Amit marries Shobha to spare her form these tragic circumstances. In the bargain, he has to forgo his own love interest. Chandni is left heart- broken. There is yet another twist in the tale. Shobha loses her baby in a car accident. With no baby to bond the two together, Amit start straying. Amit enters into a clandestine romance with Chandni. He rekindles his romance with his old flame. She is now married to Dr VK Anand ( Sanjeev Kumar) who is completely besotted by his beautiful wife.
One day Chandni accidentally hits a man crossing the road. It becomes a police case and Amit tries to hush up the matter. Coincidentally, the Police Inspector turns out to be none other than a cousin of Shobha's. Amit and Chandi are completely exposed. Their respective spouses have been becoming suspicious of late too sensing their growing closeness at a Holi celebration.
The film proceeds its end when Amit realizes his folly and decides to give his legally wed wife her due share of happiness. The film end with the wife getting a precedence over the other woman.
The scenes were deftly handled by the producer director of the film Yash Chopra. He specializes in trilogies and has had a career making romantic films dripping with poetry. The script of the poetic romance-Silsila was penned by Preeti Bedi. The soul stirring dialogues were written by Romesh Sharma. The screenplay of the film-Silsila was jointly handled by the director as well as the screen playwright Sagar Sarhadi. Together they managed the delicate handling of the bold and complex relationships in which their characters are embroiled. The brilliant dialogues of the film can be attributed to the fac that the lading character of the film himself is a writer. Thus he mouth some of the most poetic lines in the film ever. This is true of the refrain in the song “Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye Hum” as well. The songs of the film were shot in the picturesque locales shot including the garden of violet tulips at Holland. The rest of the songs of the film are true gems like “ Neela Aasmaan” “Jo Tum Todo Piya” “Dekha Ek Khawab”to name a few. Silsila is laced with lilting lyrics. This is particularly true of songs like the Holi number “Rang Barse”, the flirtatious song “Ladki Hai Ya Shola” and the opening song “Sarse Sarke” . These moving numbers were magnificently rendered in the golden voices of stalwarts like Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar and the late Kishore Kumar.
