Saathiya is among the films that are remakes of South Indian movies. The Tamil version of Saathiya was made by the famous director Mani Ratnam. The Hindi version was made by Shaad Ali whose Saathiya was the first film. His debut as a director was well appreciated by the common people. The film depicted the life of a urban couple who married against the wishes of their family and their eventual hardships. Saathiya was released in the year 2002. The star cast comprised of Rani Mukherjee, Vivek Oberoi, Sandhya Mridul, Tanuja, Satish Shah and others. There were guest appearances made by Tabu and Shah Rukh Khan along with Shamita Shetty for a song.

The Tamil movie of Alaipayuthey was released in 2002 and it was one of the biggest grosser at the box office down south. The film is in flashback and it was screened at the prestigious Casablanca Film Feastival. The producer of Saathiya was Yash Chopra, Mani Ratnam and Bobby Bedi.
This Bollywood film is about Aditya who is a law student played by Vivek Oberoi who falls in love with Suhani Sharma who too is a student studying medicine. They meet at a common friends wedding party and Aditya falls madly in love with Suhani. Suhani at first tries to avoid Aditya as she thinks falling in love would distract her from her career, but Aditya relentlessly pursues her until she gives in. There is massive opposition to their match from both the families and they finally decide to go against the wishes of their family and get married. All goes well when they settle down to a house for few days. After some days, Suhani finds that Aditya is not paying much attention to her which irritates her to no end. There are fights regarding trivial issues and they finally seem to go apart. The final union comes after Suhani has an accident and goes into coma.
It is at this juncture of Saathiya, that Aditya realises how much he loves Suhani. Like all romantic Hindi movies, in the end all ends well with Suhani coming out of coma. There are many romantic songs and sequences in the film. The movie was aimed at the young generation who rush in things without thinking of the consequences. The film in a way is very realistic and interesting. Apart from the songs that are dream sequences, the rest of the movie is very realistic. Vivek Oberoi as Aditya plays a very convincing role and so does Rani Mukherjee as Suhani as a medical student. Shah Rukh and Tabu play a couple who are responsible for Suhani's accident. It is by their car that Suhani has an accident. The film has won many awards in the categories of best music, dialogue, screenplay, lyrics, playback singer and the critics award in the Filmfare Awards.
Rani Mukherjee as Suhani was awarded as the best performer for the film. The dialogue was written by Sampooran Singh Gulzar. The famous composer A.R Rahman composed the songs and music of Saathiya. The famous songs are the title song, “Chori pe Chori”, “Hum Dum”, “Chalka Re”, “Banjar hai Sab Banjar” and many more.
