My Best Friend's Wedding

My Best Friend's Wedding was released in the year 1997. It enjoys the distinction of being one of the most memorable romantic comedies of the year. Directed by P. J. Horgan, it stars Julia Roberts, as the central character Julianne Potter. The other star cast includes Cameron Diaz, Dermot Mulroney, Rupert Everett and Rachael Griffiths.

The film revolves around a very unique story concerning the main female protagonist Julianne Potter played by Roberts. Potter is a 27 year-old New York restaurant critic. She come s to hear that her long time male friend Michael O' Neal ( Mulroney) is soon to walk down the aisle. This news jolts her out of her complacency. She is taken by surprise as she had got into an agreement with Michael O' Neal in the past. They had mutually agreed to tie the knot with each other if they reached the age of 28 and were yet not married. Potter secretly harbored the hopes that the agreement work out to her interest. The fresh bit of news militates against her long nurtured desires to marry O' Neal.

This leads to number of surprises in the film. What follows next in My Best Friend's Wedding is Potter's attempts to frustrate the wedding. Sometimes posing as Kimmy's maid of honor or sometimes faking her own engagement to her homosexual friend George ( Rupert Everett). At times even brainwashing O' Neal into believing that his fiancée is using her to her own interest. Potter's schemes are devious and sometimes even bordering on cruelty.

When each of these schemes start falling on their faces, she finally confesses to O' Neal that she is hopelessly in love with him. However, My Best Friend's Wedding ends with O' Neal marrying his fiancée. Potter takes this sportingly and even dances with George at O' Neal wedding reception.

My Best Friend's Wedding has some very good music. The song “I Say a Little Prayer For You” was sung by Diana King. It is repeated often in the film to add to the poignancy of the emotions present in the film. This song went on to top the charts. It went on to feature on the Billboard top 20 list of hit songs. he soundtrack of the film- My Best Friend's Wedding also featured a number of songs sung by top singers like Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

My Best Friend's Wedding went on to win a lot of accolade. It won a lot of nominations including the prestigious Academy Award. This included nominations for the performance of its lead pair and its musical score.

Hogan is immensely successful in portraying his female characters convincingly. He manges to elicit captivating performances from them. In fact, Roberts delivers one of the most memorable performances of her life. Infact, one of the characters in the film Diaz himself remarks that potter is much more than a Cardboard ingenue. She has the capacity to appear convincingly comic and dramatic at the same time. It is the well timed comedy of the film that shows up making it such a favorite with the audiences.
