Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It is a touching story about three characters. The main characters of the film are played by Salman Khan (Samir), Aishwarya Rai (Nandini) and Ajay Devgan (Vanraj). Love is the main theme of the film. The movie was released on June 18, 1999.
The music is one of the main highlights of the film. Ismail Darbar has done a commendable job by composing extraordinary music for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. The film has 11 songs in total. All the songs deserve special mention. The title track “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” and other songs such as “Ankhon Ki Gustakhiyan”, “Chand Chupa Badal Mein”, “Tadap Tadap”are very good compositions.

Albela Sajan is a semi classical song. Dholi Taaro Dhol Baaje, Kaipoche, Nimbooda have folk elements in them. The lyrics are also flowing and beautiful.
The plot of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam revolves around Nandini played by Aishwarya Rai. She is a bright young girl and is the daughter of Pandit Darbar, who is a well known Indian Classical singer. They live in a huge mansion located at Rann of Kutch. She has been pampered by her father and has been brought up in a very liberal way than her cousins.
On day Sameer (Salman Khan) comes into the family to learn Hindustani music from Pandit Darbar (Vikram Ghokle). He has an Indo-Italian parentage and is a happy-go-lucky person. He has a strange way of speaking which made everyone laugh at him. They family started liking him. Both Nandini and Sameer gel with each other very well and finally falls in love with each other.
In the mean time Vanraj played by Ajay Devgan happens to meet Nandini in a wedding ceremony. He too falls in love with Nandini. Ajay Devgan was a lawyer by profession. He was very keen in marrying Nandini. Pandit Darbar who always wanted to get her daughter married to a singer agrees to the marriage when his friend played by Rajiv Verma asks for his daughter's hands.
When Nandini's family comes to know about it the relationship that has developed between Sameer and Nandini, they throws Sameer out of the house. Nandini was forced to get married to Vanraj. He is very much in love with his wife but finds out that she gives a very cold response to him. By sheer chance, he came to know about Sameer. He looses temper, but then he takes a very vital decision. He takes Nandini to Italy so that she can be with Sameer. Finally they were able to find out Sameer. What follows next is narrated in the rest of the story of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam established Aishwarya Rai as a talented actress in Bollywood. She was won Filmfare award for Best Actress. It also won awards Ajay Devagan and Salman Khan also gave brilliant performances. Ajay Devgan played the role of a perfect husband. Vikram Ghokle has acted quite well. He played the role of a loving father. His characters has grey shades. Zohra Segal who played Aishwayra Rai grandmother makes a mark in the film.
