Braveheart, released in 1995, happens to be the 271st biggest grossing movie in all over the world. The script was written by Randall Wallace. The movie in the very earliest time after its release created a great sensation in the whole world.

Peter Hanly acts as Edward, the Prince of Wales while Ian Bannen fits himself well into the role of the father of Robert the Bruce. The role of Robert the Bruce is played by Angus Macfadyen. Sophie Marceau is cast as Princess Isabelle, the wife of King Edward, while Catherine McCormack plays the role of Murron, the wife of William Wallace.

William Wallace is affected by the ruthless tyranny of the English King, Edward or Longshanks. In his early childhood he becomes a bereaved son and brother as his father and brother are killed by the army of the king. He is taken by his uncle who rears him up. The next time we see William Wallace in quite matured age of his. He is in love with Murron, his childhood friend whom he now impresses by showing her the thistle that was gifted to Wallace by Murron in the childhood and he preserved it carefully for all these years. Wallace apparently wants to lead his life as Peasant and wants to keep away from the troublesome royal affairs.

But the problem arises in Wallace's life as he finds his wife attacked by the English soldiers because he married Murron without the knowledge of the King, depriving him of the scope to deflower her, the right of which the king automatically had by dint of Prima Nocte. He killed a good number of English soldiers. But the village Sheriff kills Murron by cutting her throat in public. Wallace, not getting the scope to save her, gets mad to take revenge.

A number of battles and Wallace's victory in those lead him ultimately to the Battle of Falkirk. During this battle, Wallace gets defeated and escapes to the forest, with the plan of conducting guerrilla war on the British, which he is even successful to materialize. But he is betrayed by the Scottish Noble whom he kills afterwards. In the mean time Princess Isabella has a tryst with Wallace and consequentially conceives Wallace's child. Due to the betrayal Wallace is caught and sentenced to undergo purification through pain. Factually, he is tortured to death.

The acting of all the actors was efficient enough to fit the characters that they were playing the role of. Mel Gibson demands special praise for the impulsive and spontaneous acting that he manifested. His expressions did fit the character that was supposed to be a tragic hero.
