Bombay is one of the popular bollywood movies released in 1995. It was originally released in Tamil but then it was dubbed in Hindi. The movie became a huge hit and was widely appreciated. Bombay was directed by Mani Ratnam and was produced by Mani Ratnam and S. Sriram. The music for the movie was given by A.R. Rahman. The duration of the movie is 121 minutes. Bombay has a very serious plot. The plot revolves around the events occurred in India during 1992 to 1993 including the Ayodhya and Babri Masjid controversy. The film became a controversy in India and abroad after its release.

Bombay is dubbed in both Hindi and Telugu. The movie was banned in Malaysia, Pakistan and Singapore. The story of Bombay is about a Hindu boy who falls in love with a Muslim girl. Shekhar (Arvind Swamy) is from a Hindu family living in a village in Tamil Nadu. Shekhar is studying for journalism and is studying in Bombay. Shekhar regularly visited his parents. On the way back to Bombay he meets a girl called Shaila Bano (Manisha Koirala) and falls in love with her. Initially Shaila maintained the distance but eventually she also falls in love. Both the families oppose their relationship and force them to forget each other. Shekhar annoyed with his family goes back to Bombay. The pressure from Shaila'a family forces her to run away. She reaches Bombay along with Shekar and eventually get married. After year of marriage Shaila give birth to twins. This helps the families to get closer. In the meanwhile Hindu/Muslim riots disrupts the Bombay city killing hundreds. The target of violence reach both family and the security of their twin children became a serious concern. This excellent plot with a wonderful music by A.R. Rahman made the movie a huge hit.
Bombay won many awards. In 1995 it won the Filmfare Award for 'Best Film' (Critics) and Best Performer (Critics) for Manisha Koirala. In 1996 a special award was given to the movie by Political Film Society (USA). Then again in the same year it won National Awards for Best Editing and Best Feature Film on National Integration. The background of the music and the songs are still popular. The characterization is excellently done. Both the characters 'Shekhar and 'Shaila' exhibited wonderful chemistry. The background music and the topic with national integration made the movie a huge success. The song sequences are good and well defines the mood of the film. The 'Bombay Theme' track of the movie became so popular that it was used in various Hollywood movies and many international commercials. Bombay was screened in many international film festivals like in Philadelphia Film Festival 1996. Recently in 2005 a book was published on the film by BFI. Bombay is a worth watching movie.
