America’s Sweethearts

America's Sweethearts is a romantic comedy of 2001, featuring Katherine Zeta-Jones, John Cusack, Billy Crystal, and Julia Roberts. The film is directed by Joe Roth.Billy Crystal produced, wrote, and featured in this film. Hence, the film can justifiably be hailed as the romantic comedy of the year. America's Sweethearts satirises the pitiless publicists, conceited movie stars, inefficient studio heads, and the press. The film is just about anyone who is involved in the entertainment industry. America's Sweethearts puts an entertaining twist on the behind-the-scenes workings of press expeditions and shows. The film demonstrates that in Hollywood a smile usually nothing but teeth.
The film revolves around the story of a Hollywood megastars couple, Gwen Harrison and Eddie Thomas. They have split up after years of marriage and after years they are starring together in a films.

The film is in great danger of being a mess not just because the two of them have appeared together after a long time, but also because the psychotic director, Hal Weidman, is directing the film-America’s Sweethearts. He demands the film should be initially screened in front of the press even before the studio executives have a chance to see it. The head of the studio, Dave Kingman has also fired the only publicists capable of drawing away the press along with Gwen and Eddie. Danny Wax is the hapless replacement of Lee. Danny Wax is way out of his work with no practical experience in organizing major publicity events. Kingman hires Lee back with the provision that he must get Gwen and Eddie to show up at the junket and greet the press. Gwen is in lust with a Spaniard with a lisp, who thinks himself the next to Arnold Schwarzenegger. The story of America's Sweethearts follows every rule in the book of romantic comedies and the ending is hardly a surprise.

Unlike Runaway Bride and Someone Like You, a lot of interesting incidents happen between the opening and closing of the movie. Crystal is a veteran actor of Hollywood and Tolan is a master of satire. Together they meticulously pin the marketing machinations of Hollywood and legt no stone unturned. One big reason for the tremendous success of America's Sweethearts is that it has a terrific ensemble of actors. Julia Roberts reducess herself for the so called "The Mexican" with her wonderfully funny yet exciting portrayal of the ugly-duckling sister who is at Gwen's motion-and-call 24 x7. Kathrina Zeta-Jones is perfectly portrayed as the self-centered and old star. Crystal gives himself many of the film's best lines, while Azaria has a number of scenes as a Spaniard with a speech obstructer. America's Sweethearts may look like just another romantic comedy, but it actually a brilliant satire on the Hollywood movie marketing machines. Other targets of America's Sweethearts include the slander practice of the techniques of marketing used by studio of Hollywood to manipulate the media and Hollywood press junkets.
