Abhimaan was nominated for many categories in the Filmfare Film Awards and won many awards too. The curiosity of the film among general public was created by posters and songs as in those days movie promotions were not that advanced as in today's age.
Abhimaan was a film inspired by an English film released in the year 1954, A Star Is Born. Amitabh Bachchan plays the role of Subir Kumar who is a very successful singer by profession. Jaya Bachchan played the character of Uma who sang very well and lived in the village. Subir was a bachelor until he met Uma and they got married. Knowing Uma has a wonderful voice, he tries to promote her as well. This highlighting of Uma's voice gives Uma too a chance to sing professionally. Uma's voice becomes very famous within a short period of time and Subir's popularity wanes. This makes Subir jealous of his wife's success and creates a rift among their relationship. Abhimaan means pride and the movie portrays how pride drove both Uma and Subir away from one another. The marriage seems to break apart but like all Bollywood movies, the end is a happy one where pride is conquered by Subir to restore normalcy in the relationship.
For Abhimaan, Jaya Bachchan got the award of the Best Actress at the Filmfare Awards. The film was thought by the general public as the real life portrayal of the couple. In reality, Jaya was more successful as an actor than Amitabh and the film was said to portray this aspect. The music director of Abhimaan was the famous S.D. Burman and the lyrics of the melodious songs were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The songs were sung by Kishore Kumar, Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar. Abhimaan was produced by Pawan Kumar and Susheela Kamat. As a supporting character, actress Bindu played the role of Chitra. Bindu usually played the part of vamps and negative characters in the films but in this movie she plays a friend who sympathies with the ordeal of the couple.
